Summer Session - World Cultures

NOTE: This course may be hazardous to your world view!


    The WORLD CULTURES class is a people-centered study involving an in-depth look at the world's major cultures. The study of each of these cultures will focus upon historical and present-day culture and geography, family life and structure, social organizations, attitude on education, religious beliefs and institutions, economic life, political trends, and the intellectual and artistic accomplishments of men and women within the culture.

    The purpose of this course is to help students gain an understanding of themselves as members of a global community. Through the examination of diverse world cultures, students will come to appreciate both their heritage and that of other peoples.


    In addition this course will review some of the greatest challenges our world faces today. These challenges include climate change, fresh water scarcity, hunger, world population growth and global terrorism.

    CURRENT EVENTS: Whenever appropriate, a part of each class will involve a discussion of important events that have occurred over the past 24 hours.
Goals of the Course
Develop an appreciation of the major features of the world’s cultures
Understand how different societies are organized and structured
Gain insight into the nature of contemporary world problems
Experience and understand the various expressions of different cultures
Develop an understanding of why cultural differences exist and how the world came to be as it is
 Please remember that you are in control of your success in this class.
 Take responsibility for your work and be accountable for your actions.
